Never did she ever think he would throw her off the roof, but she couldn't help the terrified squeal that escaped her throat when he pretended to. She then placed her hand over her chest and breathed, then burst out laughing. "Not funny!" she exclaimed, lightly shoving him back. His sweater was big for her, and now that she was standing, the sleeves fell over her hands and she bent her fingers around the ends just because.
She had completely lost track of time, and had even forgotten she was supposed to be attending classes, so she had no thoughts of school. Later she might panick: Amity members never missed a class, because it caused conflict. But she would not regret it if she did. Luckily, for now, the thought never crossed her mind.
"Um, nothing," Amberly answered him, lifting her head and smiling. The good thing about the cold was that it would mask her flushed cheeks. If he pointed it out, all she had to do was say her face was cold. Simple as that. Oh, the benefits of cold weather, she thought with a small smile. "You're really tall," she then said, deciding not to completely lie to him. "Not that I'm complaining. I just only noticed now."

"You laughed, didn't you?" Dimitri asked, feigning confusion. "Or do you Amity always laugh at things that aren't funny?" he raised an eyebrow, smirking at her. She has a cute laugh. And a cute face when she laughs, he thought. "Weird," he shook his head, still smiling.
Dimitri laughed when she commented on his height. "Maybe you're just short," he suggested, his eyes roving over her face, from her hairline to her chin and back up again. Her face was red-- probably from the cold --and his hands itched to touch it, to warm her up. It was then that he realized how close they were standing. He could feel life and energy radiating off of her like static electricity. He tucked his traitor hands in the pockets of his jeans.

Amberly opened her mouth to reply to him, but found that she had no argument. "Well then yes. Maybe it's just an Amity thing," she joked. "Or maybe the rule is only I can laugh at anything and it's acceptable. Even if it's not funny," she said, and giggled at the ridiculous statement. She then pressed her lips together to keep from laughing again. She was not sure what was so funny. It just felt good to laugh -- even at nothing at all.
Amberly jokingly glared at him. "Who are you calling short?" she asked in a pretend-offended voice, then had to bite her lip again to hold back more laughter. She liked hanging out with him, even though she hadn't been for so long. It was relaxing, and fun. If someone told her she would be standing on the roof of the school with a Dauntless and laughing, she'd probably have laughed in their face at the ridiculousness of it. The roof was terrifying to her, and she had only before trusted Tyler to bring her up there. But it was Dimitri who was making her stay. Things for silent suddently and Amberly brushed some fly-away strands of hair out of her face, then looked up at Dimitri properly, studying his face with curiosity. He looked... strong. And friendly. His eyes had a kind look to them, and she absolutely adored the colour. She caught herself staring a fraction longer than she had planned, but instead of looking away this time, she just smiled and said, "You have a really interesting eye colour, did you know that?"

Dimitri laughed, too. "I don't mind that rule," he told Amberly. He liked her laugh. Almost as much as he liked her. "Even if it's about as strange as you are," he teased, squeezing his fists in his pockets to resist the sudden urge to reach out and touch her hair.
He laughed again at Amberly's mock anger when he mentioned her height. "You're tiny," he told her, smiling. "I could probably lift you with one hand if I wanted to." Dimitri took his hands out of his pockets and folded his arms across his chest. "Same goes for tossing you off this roof," he teased again, his voice low. "I wonder how far I could throw you..." he joked, touching his chin as he pretended to calculate a distance.
"Do I now?" Dimitri asked when Amberly commented on his eye color. He couldn't even recall at the moment what color his eyes were. Blue or green, maybe, but how was that interesting? "You've got rather nice eyes yourself, Amberly. Very bright, very pretty. Like you."

"Oh, so you think I'm strange, huh? You're the one who eats your lunch on a rooftop and jumps onto fast-moving trains," she teased. She actually admired the Dauntless for the bravado to do such stunts. Amberly doubted she ever could; she was too hestitant and terrified. She had always known she would choose Amity come her Ceremony. And she didn't think anything could change that. But of course, nothing was ever set in stone.
"One hand!" she exclaimed, laughing, her head tilting back as she did so. "Well I don't know how far you might be able to throw me, but I do know this: Doesn't matter how far you throw me; I'll still look the same when I hit the ground. A big, broke, bloody mess." She wrinkled her nose at the thought, and shuddered at the horrifying image she then had of her lying crippled and dead on the ground, blood mixing in with her blonde hair. She blinked and tossed the thought from her mind. "So don't even think about it," she added, grinning. This is fun, she thought. She hadn't joked around this much with someone in a while.
This time Amberly did not hide her face when she blushed after Dimitri complimented her eyes in turn. She beamed at him, feeling her stomach flutter when he called her pretty, and didn't know how to reply. "Thanks," she finally said, her voice soft and shy. Amberly cast her eyes downwards again and wrapped her arms around herself, a chill going up down her spine -- but it was neither from the cold or from fear.

"I know you're strange, Amberly," Dimitri laughed. "I don't think I've ever met someone quite like you," he said, smiling so that she would know that it was, in fact, a good thing. He was surprised by how much he liked the Amity girl, and how fast he had learned to like her. He had a bunch of friends, sure, but they were all Dauntless, and they had all known each other since they were very young. Amberly, on the other hand, was Amity, and he had only known her for a little while. It was strange.
Dimitri almost winced at the image Amberly painted of her lying broken on the snowy ground below, but he held back. "No, I suppose we don't want that," he said quietly, a lazy half smile on his face. "Guess you're safe for now, eh?" he winked.
"You're welcome," he said softly when she thanked him. He watched in silence as she seemed to fold into herself, looking down and hugging herself. Dimitri didn't understand why she was doing this-- had she been offended by his compliment? Why? He was just speaking the truth, after all. Just being nice. Yet she seemed to shrink with it.

"I'm not really that different from most Amity," Amberly admitted, but smiled, grateful for his compliment. "I'm just an ordinary Amity-born girl. But I guess," she said, tilting her head slightly to the right. "that everyone is unique. So calling myself ordinary is not one hundred percent accurate. Especially considering I've never met anyone like you before, and though you must be similar to most Dauntless, I doubt you're like all of them. Not many, for example, would be talking to me right now. I'm Amity. I'm a tree-hugging, kum-ba-yah singing Amity. But I'm proud of it," she added, not wanting him to think she disliked her faction. on the contrary; she loved it.
When Dimitri winked at her, Amberly smiled flirtatiously back. "Well I sure hope so," she said in response to his safe comment. She was safe, though, she knew. She felt safe around Dimitri. She could just tell he would not harm her. She felt protected. Of course, she would keep those thoughts to herself; she didn't want to weird him out. But safety and comfort was something Amberly valued, and if someone could give her that, she valued them.
When a silent moment took over, Amberly chanced a look up at Dimitri. She studied him through her eyelashes, her flushed cheeks calming down slightly as her heart-rate picked up as she decided on saying something bold. Like she thought he was attractive, or that his sweater smelled really good. "Hey, Dimitri?" she said, her voice slightly shaky. She met his eyes, however, and lost all confidence. Amberly laughed nervously and shook her head, her words becoming lost at the tip of her tongue. "Nevermind," she said, swallowing, and feeling embarassed. She ran a hand through her hair and took a step backward, only to shriek as she slipped on a patch of ice.

"Of course, you are different from most Amity simply because you don't find me to be some terrifying, clinically insane freak with a death wish... or, maybe you do," Dimitri laughed, "But wait--" he feinged surprise "You're one of those?" his eyes widened. "I can't believe I'm talking to you, I should leave before someone sees me..." he glanced around, as if nervous.
Dimitri was confused at the sudden change in Amberly's attitude-- she seemed nervous and jumpy again. "No, what is it?" he asked, right before she slipped and fell on the cold, hard ground. As much as he liked her, he still had to resist the urge to laugh.
"Are you alright?" He squatted, offering her a hand. "You're a bit of a klutz, aren't you?" Dimitri teased. "Explains why you were afraid of being up on the roof, huh? Let's keep you away from the edge now... don't know what I'd do if you fell off." He still wondered what it was that she was going to tell him before-- he hated it when people said 'never mind' instead of telling him something --but he wasn't going to push it just yet. He wanted to make sure she was alright, first.

Amberly laughed at his adaptation of how the other factions saw the Dauntless. "I don't think you're clinically insane," she said seriously, and then added with a joking smirk, "I mean, I doubt you'd be allowed up here if you were." She then rolled her eyes as he teased her about being one of 'those' types of Amity.
Amberly was saved from having to explain her sudden change of mind of saying something when she slipped and fell hard on her backside. She groaned as she took Dimitri's offered hand. "That's going to bruise," she noted with a frowned, wiping snow and ice from her behind with one hand, her body half-twisting to see if there was any snow left. "Thanks," she smiled at Dimitri, before pulling her hand back, because she was blushing again. You're such a pathetic idiot. Blushing and stuttering just because he's good-looking and nice, she scolded herself. She considered this for a moment, and decided that even if she was attracted to him, it did not mean she had the right to act like a complete fool. And now she had even gone and embarrassed herself by falling on her backside right in front of him. "I guess I am kind of klutzy," she admitted with a shaky laugh. "Though I blame the ice." She glanced at the edge of the roof as he mentioned it and stepped carefully away from it, not wanting to risk it even though she was far enough away. "Well I'd hope you'd call for help," she said with a joking tone. "If, you know... I lived," she added, ignoring the morbid thought.

"Actually, it isn't that hard to escape from the hospital," Dimitri said seriously. "You just wait until they let you out into the courtyard, scale the wall when no one is looking and jump into the surrounding moat. Then it's just a simple matter of fighting off the alligators and getting over the electric fence at least semi-conscious," he told her matter-of-factly with a wink. "Piece of cake," he chuckled.
When Amberly blushed, Dimitri couldn't help but smile. She blushed so easily and so often, and he found it absolutely adorable. Part of him wondered, though, if her frequent flushing had something to do with him, or if it was just typical of her. He realized that he wanted to get to know her better to find out. He wanted to know all the little things that made her tick.
"Don't mention it," he said coolly when she thanked him. "But I don't think it's the ice's fault you felt-- after all, you stepped on it," he reminded her with a laugh. "And you know, I don't think I would call for help," he smiled. "You know us Dauntless. Completely stupid. I'd probably jump to see if I could stick a better landing than you," he joked.
"Now," Dimitri looked down at her curiously. "What was it you were going to say before gravity so rudely interrupted you?"

Amberly stared up at Dimitri in amusement as he told her that escaping from a mental hospital would not be all that hard. Her expression as he told the story was that of half of smile and the beginning of a laugh, until he finished with a chuckle, which Amberly then joined in on, laughing. "Funny," she commented. "So there's a great chance I'm on an icy roof with a mental patient escapee." She shrugged. "Well I guess I can deal with that. So tell me," she continued, raising her eyebrows jokingly at him. "How many alligators were there?"
"Ohh, I see," Amberly said with another laugh. "So I guess I should be apologising to the ice then, huh?" She looked back at the spot she had fallen on and began to act over-dramatically. "Oh dear ice patch, I am eternally sorry for being so clumsy and having fallen on your cold, slippery surface. I promise," she continued, placing a hand over her chest like she was making a vow. "That I will from here on treat all ice patches with the utmost care, and never fall on another again, or else throw myself off this roof." She glanced out of the corner of her eyes at Dimitri and smirked, then gave a curtsy in the direction of the ice patch. "I should make that a poem," she joked. "An ode to ice patches everywhere."
This is really, really fun, Amberly decided, feeling a lot more relaxed now after all of the laughing.[/i] Amberly placed her hands on her hips and pretended to scold him. "Now now, Dimitri. What if you went to stick the better landing and slipped on our icy friend, hm? You'd have to apologise to it and to the ground when you landed." She lifted a hand to her mouth to stop from giggling at her own joke. Wasn't that weird or something, if you laughed at your own joke? Amberly couldn't remember, but decided she didn't really care, either.
She had thought all was forgotten after she had slipped and fallen, but then Dimitri brought back the little moment she had had earlier, causing Amberly to stop laughing and press her lips together nervously. "Um," she said, thinking about what she could say. "I don't really know exactly what I was going to say," she said truthfully. "But..." She pursed her lips together against to stop a nervous giggle from escaping. "Um... Oh my goodness," she said, deciding to just blurt it out. "I like this... Talking and joking around with you up here. And.." She closed her eyes for the next part. "I think you're attractive, and it's making me nervous. Oh my goodness, I'm an idiot, I've known you for like, five minutes," she blurted, pressing the backs of both her hands to her cheeks as if to cool them down and stop the immense redness she had just induced with her confession.

"Thirty seven," Dimitri answered without missing a beat. "Huge things, vicious. And they had guns, you know. Crazy. I got shot nineteen times. I'm lucky to have gotten out alive," he nodded seriously.
Laughing, Dimitri applauded. "That was very nice, Amberly. I'm sure ice patches everywhere appreciated those beautiful words," he said solemnly. "You'll be a hero among ice-- I can see it now. Traveling about New Chicago, spreading awareness for these poor, forgotten ice patches. They would erect an ice sculpture and your figure, I bet, if an ice patch was capable of movement or was sentient," Dimitri told her with a laugh. "Alas, they are not. At least you will know the good you've done."
"But you know," Dimitri mocked her stance, placing his hands on his hips in the most ridiculous fashion. "The dead can't apologize, dear. And to think, the ice would have to live out the rest of it's days without apology! Tragic. You know, I think I would spare it that torment and not jump off the roof after all," he laughed again. He didn't want to ever stop talking to Amberly. He liked the way she got nervous easily, the way she laughed at her own jokes, the way she laughed at his. He liked her
Dimitri grinned. "I like this, too. A lot," he said. "It's nice. I never really do this," he told her, then tried his hardest not to grin again when Amberly said she thought he was attractive. "If it makes you feel any better," he lowered his voice a bit. "I find you extremely attractive," he told her, a bit sheepish, and rubbed the back of his neck before recovering from his admission. "And it would make a lesser person nervous, I assure you. If I wasn't so," Dimitri jokingly jerked his neck, flipping his messy blond hair. "Fantastic, I'm sure I'd be nervous, too." He winked.

"Alligators with guns!" Amberly exclaimed, opened her eyes wide in surprise. "Oh, dear. Now that's something. And you escaped them? Any scars?" she asked, blinking innocently. "If you can't be taken down by thirty-seven armed alligators, I don't think anything could," she joked.
Amberly laughed along with Dimitri when he applauded her speech. "I'll be their most respected Ice Queen. Erm, in a nicer sense than people view 'ice queen' as, anyways," she added with a small smile. "Their ice protector and saviour," she then giggled.
"Perhaps then you should spare them," she agreed with an amused nod. "Oh, what a selfless hero you are," she teased. "You can be the Ice Knight, and I, as Ice Queen, can knight you with my ice sceptre." All of this joking around was incredibly amusing, and even more fun. She had never had this much fun with Tyler. Usually by now they were arguing, or he was going off on a vent about something that happened to him that shouldn't have, because he was Tyler Damon, and he was perfect. She felt slightly guilty for all the feelings she was, well, feeling towards Dimitri when she talked and joked around with him. Tyler wouldn't like it. But he went off and dated and flirted and messed around with other girls, so why couldn't Amberly? It wasn't like she and Tyler were exclusive. Although, she would never tell Tyler about this. He'd explode.
Amberly opened her eyes when Dimitri lowered his voice, suddenly sounding more serious. So far he had not laughed in her face because of her confession. Perhaps... he wouldn't? "Really?" she asked, feeling herself blush even more when Dimitri called her not only attractive, but extremely so. A smile erupted on her face, brightening her features, and she then laughed at his arrogant comment. "Well that makes me feel a lot better," she said jokingly. And it did.

Dimitri laughed, "Oh, no, no scars. The bullets bounced right off me, see. My skin is made of diamonds," he told her, his tone still stern and serious. He lifted his shirt slightly. "See? Not a scratch on me," he said, then let the fabric fall back over his stomach. "Alligators didn't stand a snowflakes chance in hell."
When Amberly spoke of being their ice queen, he nodded seriously. "They will forevermore hold parades and festivals in your honor. Your name will be remembered by ice everywhere until the end of time."
Dimitri bowed, "I thank you, my queen. I solemnly swear to do my best to protect and serve the the ice of New Chicago," he promised, placing his hand over his heart. "So long as I am around, no patch of ice shall have to fear being stepped on or salted, for they are under my care and your rule," he finished, standing up straight. A smile spread across his face. Dimitri hadn't had this much fun in ages. It felt so easy and nice here with Amberly, like he could be himself in the purest sense and know that Amberly would still like him. He hadn't felt like that since Alexandra left, and even when she was still at home it was always a very cautious freedom. This was unreal. It was perfect.
"You act like no one has ever told you that before," Dimitri frowned slightly. "But I'm sure that can't be true. You must just be really modest," he said. Amity boys must have been flocking over Amberly. She was so pretty, so funny, so sweet. She must have had tons of boys pining after her. Dimitri's frown deepened. He didn't like that at all.

"Diamond skin, eh?" Amberly said, her eyebrows raised to create a mock impressed expression. "Wow, you must be every girl's best friend. You know what they say," she added, as her eyes fell to his stomach. She then lost her train of thought as she was slightly mesmerised by the sight of his body (or at least, a small part of it which was showing skin. Very attractive skin). Once Dimitri dropped his shirt, however, Amberly snapped out of it and looked back up at Dimitri's face, ignoring the fact that she was blushing. Again.
"In that case, let's hope there's another ice age," Amberly joked. "I'd be queen of everything." She was completely kidding of course. Only her cousin would want to actually be ruler of anything; he had the ego for it. Amberly did not.
"Oh, no," Amberly gasped dramatically. "Not the salt!" She placed a hand over her forehead, feigning weakness and dismay as he mentioned ice being stepped on or salted. "Thank goodness you are here, Sir Dimitri." She then curtseyed at him, which was entirely possibly due to the skirt she was wearing. Amberly then laughed jovially, enjoying their little ice queen/knight routine. It was terribly amusing, and even though she knew it was all a joke, she was picturing it inside of her head.
She shrugged when Dimitri commented that she acted modest. "Well, no one really has. I mean, they have," she admitted, shifting her weight from one foot to the other. She was trying to make herself sound available, but not sound pathetic. "I've been told I'm pretty, I guess." She shrugged. "But I hang out with my cousin a lot. Well, not a lot a lot. He's Candor. But at school... She trailed off and shook her head, trying not to ramble. "He's very protective of me, and he's at school. I mean, obviously. You just met him. When we hang out, people usually stay clear. Tyler's intimidating to some younger than him, and irritating to most his age or older, so I guess there weren't many opportunities? Oh my gosh, what am I saying? I sound conceited. I don't know if anyone thinks I'm attractive. They haven't really said so. If they do, they probably haven't said so because Tyler is protective. That's what I'm trying to say," she finished, rolling her eyes at her own rambling. "Sorry," she added, putting her hand to her face and sighing. "That was painful to get out," she said with a small smile. Well now he must think I'm an idiot who blabbers on all the time, she thought, frowning.
